St. George's School Vancouver review by Brown University student: St. George's School (Vancouver) science program is amazing. Although you can only take the AP class in your grade 12 year, I've found that the solid foundation that I have in physics and chemistry has made the transition to university level courses much easier than it seems to be for my other classmates at Brown. There are ample courses to take in the humanities and fine arts, but (I may be biased as an Engineering student) I found the science courses much more interesting. There is a healthy amount of competition in the school, but I always found it a positive influence and people always help each other understand concepts. Class sizes ranged from 7 to 25 or so and teachers were always ready to answer questions. The work load varies tremendously based on what courses you take, but I never found it overwhelming. Although exams are always an important part of learning, there was a lot of focus on giving us the skills to be able to learn in a university environment as well as on extracurricular activities and sports.

Extracurricular Activities

All major sports are represented as well as many other athletic activities (flag football and yoga to name a few). When I graduated the school had just been named the top athletic school in the province. Model U.N., debating, Destination Imagination, and Reach for the Top are a few of the activities that go on to compete at the national level. There is a large drama program as well. Rugby and Reach for the Top (a trivia contest) were my favorite things when I was at St. George's.

Quality of School Life

The cafeteria food was fairly healthy, if not tasty. I was a boarder and it was a great environment for having fun with the guys. There was always someone to go outside and toss a ball or play video games with and there were lots of group activities on the weekends. However, it is a single-sex environment, and there are no sister boarding schools. For full time boarders, the curfews and rules of the boarding house severely limited social activity involving girls as we sought that more and more in grades 11 and 12. The student body is about 50-50 Asian and white in the school as a whole but much more heavily Asian in the boarding house. Mostly everyone is middle or upper class and there are very few black students. The school is in a very safe neighborhood with a street nearby with shops and a movie theater.
