Belmont Hill School review by .

Belmont Hill uses character building as its main tool in helping young men fulfill their potential. Teachers spur debates amongst students by asking questions that can have a multitude of answers. Sometimes teachers may only talk a couple times in class just to steer the students to certain topics. Teachers try and stay away from lectures as a means of teaching students information, instead they lecture about personal experiences and life lessons. Starting in seventh grade students are strictly regimented and need to be doing something at all hours of the day. Year after year you gain more and more independence; however, the study and work habits have already been engrained and thus you find yourself instinctively using your free time for studying and reading. Classes are generally very small. Its normal to have about ten students in each one of your classes. Teachers are available certain times throughout the day for personal time with each student and are available with email all day. Most teachers are available to speak on the phone if the student is so inclined. All students at Belmont Hill find themselves being pushed hard enough. There is always more work, harder classes, or independent studies that enable students to progress in any area of study. There are requirements for every area of study, but they are pretty basic and thus students chose to pursue what they want. There is always an avenue for the most gifted kids who finish taking the classes offered in a certain area of study. Many students take college level classes or do independent studies to push themselves. Graduating students posses a multitude of skills but most importantly the abilities to speak with people, present clear and concise thoughts, and to think freely.

College Counseling

Students begin the college process as early as freshman year when they start visiting schools.....

Sample insights on college counseling

  • They have contacts at most of the major universities and feel perfectly comfortable picking up the phone and advocating for a student to get accepted somewhere they feel is a good fit for that student. However, these counselors are certainly not magic bullets. They cannot guarantee that a student will get into an Ivy League university...
  • For those wishing to move on to Oxford or Cambridge, the provision is second-to-none. In the months running up to application and interview, every subject faculty offers classes (often run by former Oxbridge tutors) exploring further areas of their subject as well as offering advice on personal statements, interview technique and more...

Admissions - Getting Accepted

...

Sample insights on admissions

  • For the interview, dress conservatively. Try to be very clean and put together. Also, I was a tour guide for two years and at the end of every tour, we were asked to evaluate the candidate so if you think the tour is not apart of the process, you are very wrong. Ask questions and be interested. Also, tip for the parents: the kids speak on the tour. Do not ask their questions for them...
  • Most younger siblings have an easy time in the admissions process. I can only think of one case of a younger sibling not being admitted. About half of the students who entered with me had come from public schools. The remainder came from private K-6 schools, or had transferred from other New York private schools The Elizabeth Morrow School and St. Bernard were two of the larger feeder schools...

School Life

The food in the dining hall is sub par. Food options included one entrée, a salad bar, and peanut butter and jelly. There is assigned seating for the dinning hall. Forms 1 through 3 all eat at the same time and are integrated together at tables. Forms 4 through 6 eat together in the same manor. Sports play a major role in on campus life. There is a lot of school pride and it's most evident during the winter season at hockey games. Students go to every home game and even make the trips to nearby away games and other....
