Ethel Walker School review by .

Ethel Walker provides not only an atmosphere for girls to grow academically but also on the athletic fields, in theater, dance studio, equestrian ring and all other areas of extracurricular arenas. I began my days at Ethel Walker as a girl and graduated as a young woman. The class sizes are small, in some cases between 6-10 students, which allows for incredible relationships to be formed with the teachers. One of my favorite parts of attending Walkers was the advising program throughout the entire time I was there. Not only did we meet with advisors weekly but my advisor was there for me through so many of the good and bad times. The teachers at Walkers become an extended family for the students. My teachers always made time in their busy days to help me if I needed extra help on an assignment or if I even just wanted to talk. There is a special bond with Walkers girls and their professors. I felt extremely prepared going into college, especially when it came to writing. The English and Language programs at Walkers are so strong that I was placed in very high levels once I got to university. Classes at Walkers are heavily discussion based, which is similar to my univeristy now, so I felt prepared and able to raise my hand and talk in class. While many girls get to college and feel like they needed to impress boys in class and did not talk or ask questions, I was empowered to speak my mind and raise my hand in class. Walkers teaches girls how to solve problems, work in groups and succeed. Aside from academics, Walkers helps young women grow and find their passions. There is a bond between all Walkers girls that is evident from the moment you step on campus. Many of the traditions at Walkers are so dear to my heart. I still am in touch with classmates, teachers and faculty from Walkers and cannot wait to attend my reunions.

College Counseling

I began my college search after my sophomore year of high school, so I was....

Sample insights on college counseling

  • They have contacts at most of the major universities and feel perfectly comfortable picking up the phone and advocating for a student to get accepted somewhere they feel is a good fit for that student. However, these counselors are certainly not magic bullets. They cannot guarantee that a student will get into an Ivy League university...
  • For those wishing to move on to Oxford or Cambridge, the provision is second-to-none. In the months running up to application and interview, every subject faculty offers classes (often run by former Oxbridge tutors) exploring further areas of their subject as well as offering advice on personal statements, interview technique and more...

Admissions - Getting Accepted

You can read about Walkers all you want online or from admissions materials, but go....

Sample insights on admissions

  • For the interview, dress conservatively. Try to be very clean and put together. Also, I was a tour guide for two years and at the end of every tour, we were asked to evaluate the candidate so if you think the tour is not apart of the process, you are very wrong. Ask questions and be interested. Also, tip for the parents: the kids speak on the tour. Do not ask their questions for them...
  • Most younger siblings have an easy time in the admissions process. I can only think of one case of a younger sibling not being admitted. About half of the students who entered with me had come from public schools. The remainder came from private K-6 schools, or had transferred from other New York private schools The Elizabeth Morrow School and St. Bernard were two of the larger feeder schools...

School Life

Walkers does a great job making sure that students have lots of outlets outside of the classroom. The extracurricular activities are endless. Girls can join on-campus organizations or can start their own if the school doesn't already have one. Walkers is also a part of a group of single-sex schools that get together for social events, including dances, trips to theme parks and other off-campus events. Simsbury, Connecticut is a beautiful New England town with shops, restaurants and lots of historical momuments. Walkers has two spirit clubs that every student and faculty member join during the first few weeks of....
