Nottingham High School review by .

Nottingham High School- The whole school is well maintained and well staffed. As with any staff, there are stronger and weaker teachers, but the stronger definitely outnumber the weaker. A small few are downright narrow-minded, valuing conformity to the transient school enviroment far above the sort of independence and intellectualism valued so highly at Oxbridge. That said, many of the teachers are brilliant. These are the teachers you will remember all your life, conferring their passion for their area with excellent results. In my final years at the school, however, the very best teachers were retiring. Their replacements, although competent, lacked the spark of their predecessors. Teaching is good across the board, with no particular strength or weakness. Class sizes are in general small. Sciences are particularly well catered for. The environment is not excessively competitive, and this is no exam factory although students are certainly pushed. The workload is well matched to the exams, opening the door to good results without a sweatshop approach to homework.

College Counseling

Nottingham High School provides excellent preparation for Oxbridge interviews. A great deal of useful....

Sample insights on college counseling

  • They have contacts at most of the major universities and feel perfectly comfortable picking up the phone and advocating for a student to get accepted somewhere they feel is a good fit for that student. However, these counselors are certainly not magic bullets. They cannot guarantee that a student will get into an Ivy League university...
  • For those wishing to move on to Oxford or Cambridge, the provision is second-to-none. In the months running up to application and interview, every subject faculty offers classes (often run by former Oxbridge tutors) exploring further areas of their subject as well as offering advice on personal statements, interview technique and more...

Admissions - Getting Accepted

There is an entrance examination; a bright pupil should be able to pass it without....

Sample insights on admissions

  • For the interview, dress conservatively. Try to be very clean and put together. Also, I was a tour guide for two years and at the end of every tour, we were asked to evaluate the candidate so if you think the tour is not apart of the process, you are very wrong. Ask questions and be interested. Also, tip for the parents: the kids speak on the tour. Do not ask their questions for them...
  • Most younger siblings have an easy time in the admissions process. I can only think of one case of a younger sibling not being admitted. About half of the students who entered with me had come from public schools. The remainder came from private K-6 schools, or had transferred from other New York private schools The Elizabeth Morrow School and St. Bernard were two of the larger feeder schools...

School Life

Mixed background of students, mostly just ordinary people badly let down by state provision. This is not a school full of upper class toffs; far from it. Teachers are at the very top of their profession, with jobs here naturally being highly desirable. Ethnic backgrounds are mixed, since you ask. It seems highly inappropriate to draw ethnic distinctions when choosing schools or to gather data to that effect. Neighbourhood a bit iffy--but security is good and not generally a problem. As a day school, no boarding facilities etc to comment upon. Those that exist are excellent....
