San Francisco University High School review by Johns Hopkins University student.
San Francisco University High School is no walk in the park. It asks the student to go above and beyond what is expected of a high school student. Nearly all of the classes at SFUHS, with the exception of the extraordinary Western Civilization class, are small and conducive to active participation in one's own learning. However, the care, intelligence, and energy the teachers of SFUHS possess and teach their classes differentiates the school from its pretenders. The credentials of the faculty are only surpasses by their teaching skill. The teachers understand that an intensive workload is required to achieve the greatness they expect. However, the faculty is careful to ease the student into the school's workload and is always available for help when it is required. The teachers are required to hold an hour of office hours after school Tuesday through Friday, but are almost always available for extra help when not teaching. Exams are designed to gauge the students' preparation and knowledge of the subject material; there will never be an exam just for the sake of regurgitating facts. The reputation of SFUHS as an academically challenging school is well deserved, and every student accepted to this institution will be challenged and motivated to reach his or her potential.

They have contacts at most of the major universities and feel perfectly comfortable picking up the phone and advocating for a student to get accepted somewhere they feel is a good fit for that student. However, these counselors are certainly not magic bullets. They cannot guarantee that a student will get into an Ivy League university...

For the interview, dress conservatively. Try to be very clean and put together. Also, I was a tour guide for two years and at the end of every tour, we were asked to evaluate the candidate so if you think the tour is not apart of the process, you are very wrong. Ask questions and be interested. Also, tip for the parents: the kids speak on the tour. Do not ask their questions for them...
Most younger siblings have an easy time in the admissions process. I can only think of one case of a younger sibling not being admitted. About half of the students who entered with me had come from public schools. The remainder came from private K-6 schools, or had transferred from other New York private schools The Elizabeth Morrow School and St. Bernard were two of the larger feeder schools...
San Francisco University High School promotes a very healthy and high quality of life. The classrooms and facilities are modern and equal or superior to any in its class. The four separate buildings (called campuses) each have their own charm. The upper campus is a traditional building with beautiful architecture, high ceilings and a spacious courtyard. The middle and lower campuses were built more recently, but are constantly updated and improved. The theater and library each have been beautifully redone in the past 7 years. The Sacramento campus was completed for AY 2006-7 and houses the arts and language facilities.....
