Tower Hill School review by .

Tower Hill has a very strong focus on formal writing and abstract thinking, which prepares student's for the challenge of college classes, where ideas are less straight forward and require more analytical skills. Many classes were arts and humanities based, which also aids the transition to college, as many schools are liberal arts specific. The student body at Tower Hill fosters a competitive educational experience, as all students are top scholars and have high aspirations for college. The small class sizes allow students to have personal contact with teachers, and access to extra help outside of class. This intimate setting allowed teachers to be more than simply educators, but also mentors, which is a positive relationship to have when looking to apply to college. Since Tower Hill is a smaller school, the classes were not simply 'exam only' where a few tests dictate a grade. Instead, there was a greater focus on class participation and smaller assignments that would gage more intermittently how a student was progressing with information.

College Counseling

Tower Hill has a very strong focus and prides itself on placing their students at....

Sample insights on college counseling

  • They have contacts at most of the major universities and feel perfectly comfortable picking up the phone and advocating for a student to get accepted somewhere they feel is a good fit for that student. However, these counselors are certainly not magic bullets. They cannot guarantee that a student will get into an Ivy League university...
  • For those wishing to move on to Oxford or Cambridge, the provision is second-to-none. In the months running up to application and interview, every subject faculty offers classes (often run by former Oxbridge tutors) exploring further areas of their subject as well as offering advice on personal statements, interview technique and more...

Admissions - Getting Accepted

I entered tower hill in sixth grade, at which time they required a grade transcript....

Sample insights on admissions

  • For the interview, dress conservatively. Try to be very clean and put together. Also, I was a tour guide for two years and at the end of every tour, we were asked to evaluate the candidate so if you think the tour is not apart of the process, you are very wrong. Ask questions and be interested. Also, tip for the parents: the kids speak on the tour. Do not ask their questions for them...
  • Most younger siblings have an easy time in the admissions process. I can only think of one case of a younger sibling not being admitted. About half of the students who entered with me had come from public schools. The remainder came from private K-6 schools, or had transferred from other New York private schools The Elizabeth Morrow School and St. Bernard were two of the larger feeder schools...

School Life

Recently, Tower Hill has invested strongly in aspects of student life, including a brand new cafeteria and athletic fields. The surrounding area is beautiful and consists of a mixture of faculty housing and other older, historic homes, as well as Rockford park, which the school backs up to. The general make-up of Tower Hill's student body is middle to upper class Caucasian kids. Most students live within thirty minutes of school....
