Valley Forge Military Academy and College review by .

Valley Forge Military Academy (VF) combines students with a wide range of motivations and academic abilities. The student body is generally competitive, but it only gets really fierce with the top few students in each class. There is generally a gap between them and the rest of the student body. The school is strongest in history, with many teachers who are veterans and legitimate military historians in their own right. Some sciences also benefit from ex-military teachers who served in interesting scientific fields. VF prepared me more than most of my peers at Dartmouth for living and studying away from home. The amount of work you have to balance at VF with cadet duties prepares you for life where academics is only part of the equation. I also learned to think critically when I had to deal with real-world decision making as a leader. There are countless rungs of academic support- it is exceptionally hard to fall through the cracks at VF. Every class is very small, and teachers spend a lot of time out of the classroom helping students. Nightly study halls include teachers who are there to help any student in need. Work tends to be moderate, but teachers make exceptions for legitimate cadet life excuses. The philosophy focuses on discussion and working with peers, as well as writing and research.

College Counseling

While VF (Valley Forge Military Academy) was in the process of overhauling this department when....

Sample insights on college counseling

  • They have contacts at most of the major universities and feel perfectly comfortable picking up the phone and advocating for a student to get accepted somewhere they feel is a good fit for that student. However, these counselors are certainly not magic bullets. They cannot guarantee that a student will get into an Ivy League university...
  • For those wishing to move on to Oxford or Cambridge, the provision is second-to-none. In the months running up to application and interview, every subject faculty offers classes (often run by former Oxbridge tutors) exploring further areas of their subject as well as offering advice on personal statements, interview technique and more...

Admissions - Getting Accepted

Valley Forge Military Academy is not hard to get into. If you show that you....

Sample insights on admissions

  • For the interview, dress conservatively. Try to be very clean and put together. Also, I was a tour guide for two years and at the end of every tour, we were asked to evaluate the candidate so if you think the tour is not apart of the process, you are very wrong. Ask questions and be interested. Also, tip for the parents: the kids speak on the tour. Do not ask their questions for them...
  • Most younger siblings have an easy time in the admissions process. I can only think of one case of a younger sibling not being admitted. About half of the students who entered with me had come from public schools. The remainder came from private K-6 schools, or had transferred from other New York private schools The Elizabeth Morrow School and St. Bernard were two of the larger feeder schools...

School Life

Student life is regimented. You are assigned to a multi-grade company that lives together, and you do everything with them. As you get older and show your desire to work hard, you will e promoted and have increasing responsibility for other cadets. You wake up early, work out as a company, have a short time to do personal hygiene, and proceed with the day, often marchioness from place to place. It is hard, but you learn so much. Students are generally conservative, but every opinion is accepted and discussed. Cadets like to joke about everything, so if you have never experienced....
