Lick-Wilmerding High School review by Stanford University student.
The academic environment at Lick is rigorous and well-rounded. There is a specialization on head, hearts and hands meaning great programs in the humanities and in science in addition to a strong focus on community service and the technical, visual and performing arts. The skills acquired from immersing oneself in such diverse subjects is great; these skills include critical thinking and persistence to tackle the multifaceted challenges faced in college. The teaching environment was extremely conducive to learning. Teachers were accessible and frequently met with students to help them with challenges or go over content in greater depth. The culture at Lick also helped contribute to a positive learning environment; although every student has high standards, most do not have competitive mentalities. Students frequently help each other finish problem sets or refine essays.

For the interview, dress conservatively. Try to be very clean and put together. Also, I was a tour guide for two years and at the end of every tour, we were asked to evaluate the candidate so if you think the tour is not apart of the process, you are very wrong. Ask questions and be interested. Also, tip for the parents: the kids speak on the tour. Do not ask their questions for them...
Most younger siblings have an easy time in the admissions process. I can only think of one case of a younger sibling not being admitted. About half of the students who entered with me had come from public schools. The remainder came from private K-6 schools, or had transferred from other New York private schools The Elizabeth Morrow School and St. Bernard were two of the larger feeder schools...
The student community is very liberal, but also tolerant of multiple backgrounds and perspectives. It is extremely diverse, with students having a multitude of racial, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds. Peer groups and social hierarchies are not based upon class; students integrate and bond across demographic barriers. The school has a strong counseling and support system. There is not much bullying or hazing....
